The Freecycle Network is a nationwaide grassroots movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free. Freecycle provides individuals and non-profits an electronic forum to "recycle" unwanted items. One person's trash can truly be another's treasure! There is now a local Triangle chapter.
The Scrap Exchange is a nonprofit organization that collects clean reusable industrial discards for creative art programs. They do not typically take household wastes (i.e. egg cartons, yogurt containers) but they do accept odds and ends, such as buttons, game pieces, left over ceramic tile, etc. from individuals.
